Avoiding the Sugar Rush this Halloween

Healthy Livingon October 29, 2015Leave a Comment

halloween-candyHalloween weekend is finally here! Getting all costumed up is always fun, but trying to avoid having too much sugar on this specific holiday is hard. We get a lot of questions from parents in particular about the best approach to avoid all the sugar so here are my go-to tips to tackle Halloween:

  1. Make sure your kids eat a full meal before going trick-or-treating. If they are full, they’ll be less likely to scarf down a ton of candy.
  2. Set a limit with your kids. Talk to your kids before they go trick-or-treating and make a deal with them about the amount of candy they will be eating. This helps to keep them from overloading on sugar.
  3. Separate a large portion of your candy loot to donate or bring to your office, and portion the rest of the candy out into 2-3 piece servings for your kids.
  4. Give your kids the option to trade their candy in for a gift.
  5. Your kids will most likely be tired after walking so much, make sure they drink a lot of water and brush their teeth before going to bed!
  6. Don’t forget to take your whole family in for an adjustment before and after trick-or-treating! They’ll be best prepared for all that walking if their spine is in proper alignment.

Is it a Food Allergy or Sensitivity?

Healthy Livingon October 16, 2015Leave a Comment

The word “allergy” is confusing because many people use it as a fully encompassing generic term for true allergic reactions and nonallergic adverse reactions, also called sensitivities or intolerances.

Immune reactions can result from the different types of food allergies or food sensitivities you may possess. The most common foods causing allergic reactions are peanuts, soy, wheat, shellfish, fish, milk, eggs and tree nuts. Once identified, we recommend eliminating those problematic foods from your diet.

A food sensitivity, as opposed to a food allergy, happens gradually and isn’t life threatening. Symptoms of a delayed food allergy can take up to 72 hours to appear. This type of immune response is mediated by the IgG antibody, which is the largest circulating antibody in our immune system and can cross the placenta from mother to child. IgG antibodies are the most common form of immunologic mediated food responses. It can be difficult to identify the offending food since we eat so many foods that go through different processes and have many ingredients. It is estimated that 20% of the population have an adverse reaction to a certain food.

Food allergies are divided into two major categories: immediate and delayed.

When immediate food reaction occurs, sufferers experience symptoms within hours of having ingested the food. Symptom onset is rapid and may include tingling of extremities, wheezing, coughing, tightening of the throat, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Sometimes in cases where nuts, shellfish, fish, and peanuts have been eaten anaphylaxis can occur.

Food sensitivities may be caused by many factors such as stress, infections, overeating, artificial preservatives, additives, molds, pesticides, antibiotics, and environmental pollutants. Unidentified food sensitivities can then contribute to many chronic health conditions: including Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Rheumatoid arthritis, headaches, autism, ADD/ADHD, eczema, chronic ear infections, gut malabsorption, insomnia and many others.

Alletess Medical Laboratory uses state of the art technology to identify the offending foods in your diet. Many times the foods we eat frequently and seem healthy are contributing to our health problems. At Alletess Medical Laboratory we provide a four-day rotation, elimination diet called the Wellness Plan. This customized plan is compiled directly from your test results and a nutrition questionnaire. Elimination of the offending foods and desensitization (allergy drops) can improve many health problems and lead to a better quality of life.

Alzheimer’s Disease Is Type 3 Diabetes & Aging Brain

Healthy Living, Ketones & KetoOS, Uncategorizedon October 11, 2015Leave a Comment

Walking coupleWhat if we are now able to treat and prevent Alzheimer’s? There is hope! Ketones! When we think of the body’s natural fuel source, we think of glucose, or sugar. We know that our body needs to use sugar as a fuel, but what many people don’t realize is that fats can be an equally, and even superior, fuel source to the body. The process of ketosis refers to the body’s ability to use fats as its primary source of energy, over glucose.

FACTS:

  • Alzheimer’s disease is currently ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, but recent estimates indicate that the disorder may rank third, just behind heart disease and cancer, as a cause of death for older people.
  • In most people with Alzheimer’s, symptoms first appear in their mid-60s. Estimates vary, but experts suggest that more than 5 million Americans may have Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s is now know as Type 3 diabetes.  Alzheimer’s disease was once thought to be  an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and eventually the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. May be treatable and preventable, or curable with anti-diabetic drugs.  You can watch many more stories of coconut oil or MCT oil helping Alzheimer’s.  I am happy to tell you that the coconut oil extract talked about by Oxford University has been patented and is being manufactured here in the US. Therapeutic exogenous ketones are available! KetoOS. (Click here)

We have seen or read the stories of coconut oil helping and treating  people with dementia and Alzheimer’s ,  OR have you read the literature of a ketogenic, low carb, high fat diet helping the again brain, dementia, Alzheimer’s and ADHD, ADD…..? It is true. Ketones are the fuel of choice for our most important organ, our BRAIN! Ketones do not require insulin for passing into tissue or crossing the blood brain barrier.

Treatment: It makes perfect sense that if we practice a low carb, high fat diet and live a ketogenic lifestyle we can help prevent Alzheimer;s, dementia and other disease to the brain.

Please watch this beautiful story of a wife, Dr. Mary Newport, who happens to be a medical doctor using coconut oil to help treat her husband that is showing signs of Alzheimer’s. Dr. Newport stats that the process of Alzheimer’s start 10-20 years prior to on the set of symptoms.

The Ketogenic Diet is Designed to Starve Cancer Cells

Healthy Living, LCHF/Keto Recipeson October 8, 2015Leave a Comment

Pink ribbonCancer Inhibiting – Cancer cells can’t live using ketones as a fuel!   click to watch

(NaturalHealth365) Despite the massive growth in genetic therapies, pharmaceutical and surgical technologies – chronic disease is crippling mankind. We have clearly not addressed the underlying causative factors for many conditions such as cancer. The true solutions for cancer and many other degenerative disease processes lie in the nutritional and metabolic functions of the body.

Sweet foods and starches are not genetically congruent to eat on a regular basis. Our ancestors looked at these as rare delicacies. Most people in our society today are raised on a steady diet of sugars, grains and other starches. Studies have shown that sugar is the fuel source for cancer and creates an environment of chronic inflammation that leads to other degenerative disease processes.

A closer look at traditional cultures and ketone energy usage

Many traditional cultures such as the Eskimos and Maasai tribesman consumed very little carbohydrates and survived from effective ketone formation in the body. Ketones are a form of energy that is produced by the liver through the metabolism of fatty acids. Ketones are able to cross over the blood brain barrier to provide energy for neurons. In addition, ketones have been able to support life in the absence of available glucose.

During times of fasting, which were quite common for our ancient hunter-gatherer ancestors – the stores of glucose drop and high levels of ketones are formed. Diets that are very low in carbohydrates (50-80 grams daily) and moderate in protein (0.8-1.2g/kg) are able to produce ketones in higher levels.

Research has shown that the body adapts to ketone metabolism and improves the efficiency of this fuel source over time. The specific liver hormone, FGF21, which is critical for the oxidation of the liver’s fatty acids, is upregulated in individuals who are on a ketogenic diet over time. This allows for a greater use of ketones as an energy source in the body.

How are cancer and glucose metabolism related to each other?

Famous cell biologist and cancer researcher Otto Warburg discovered that cancer cells have an altered metabolism and are unable to produce energy through cellular respiration. They drive all of their energy from substrate level phosphorylation through glucose fermentation. Other researchers such as Dr Thomas Seyfried have found that cancer cells run off of both glucose and amino acid (glutamine) fermentation.

Keep in mind, cancer cells contain ten times the amount of insulin receptors as normal cells. This allows them to gobble up glucose and other nutrients from the blood stream at an accelerated rate. As long as an individual continues to provide this form of fuel the cancer will continue to grow.

Cancer patients with the highest blood sugar readings (after eating) have the lowest survival rates

Cancer cells have damaged mitochondria and are unable to produce energy through aerobic respiration so they are unable to metabolize fatty acids for energy. They depend entirely on glucose or amino acid metabolism. So any method that restricts glucose and amino acids has the ability to starve off cancer cells.

High protein diets will continue to feed the cancer growth as will consistent eating habits. In our culture, most people eat 3-5 times a day when you include traditional meals and snacks. The constant flow of nutrition elevates blood sugar and insulin levels and allows plenty of substrate for the cancer to continue to grow.

Can fasting help to prevent cancer?

Creating a lifestyle around intermittent fasting is particularly effective at creating ketones and starving cancer cells. Highly motivated individuals with advanced cancer diagnosis may do a three to seven day cleanse where they consume nothing but water with lemon.

Others may choose to incorporate a regular fasting lifestyle in which they only eat for a 4-8 hour period each day. They may choose to eat only between the hours of 3pm and 7pm and do a 20-hour fast each day. This will force the body to make ketones to fuel the brain and body deep into the fasting period.

Individuals with a cancer diagnosis should do the daily 20 hour fast while individuals without a cancer diagnosis can do more of a 16 to 18 hour fast for optimal ketone metabolism.

A cancer killing meal plan

Meals should be focused on good fats like coconut oil, avocados, olive oil and raw nuts and seeds. Very low carbohydrate vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, asparagus, kale, collard greens, spinach, celery, cucumbers and cabbage – among others should be staple parts of the diet.

Clean proteins in moderation such as grass-fed beef, grass-fed raw cheese and fermented dairy, organic poultry and wild game are great.

Fresh squeezed lemon-lime, apple cider vinegar and other low-sugar fermented food-drink and fresh or dried herbs should be used in abundance. These help to provide organic acids, enzymes and anti-oxidants into the body.

Organic acids produce an alkaline ash once metabolized. These alkaline elements that neutralize the excess aciditiy produced by cancer cells and improve cellular oxygenation – which helps destroy cancer.
